Lynwood Unified Committee Reviews Enrollment Trends to Strengthen Schools and Programs

Lynwood Unified held its first Facilities Optimization Committee meeting on September 2 to address the challenges of declining enrollment and ensure strong schools for the future.

Since 2015, the District’s enrollment has declined by nearly 4,000 students (26.5% of enrollment) and is projected to decrease by an additional 900 students by 2028, leaving more than 6,000 empty seats across campuses.

During the live-streamed meeting, the 16-member group – made up of parents, teachers, staff and administrators – reviewed how declining enrollment creates challenges such as combination classes, reduced teacher collaboration, decreased revenues and ongoing maintenance costs.

Facilitated by Total School Solutions, the discussion also highlighted how optimizing and consolidating some schools for the 2026-27 school year could benefit students by:

  • Expanding academic and enrichment opportunities
  • Creating more equitable class sizes
  • Supporting special education inclusion
  • Allowing more investment in classroom resources

Guided by metrics established by the Board of Education, the Committee will meet again on September 16 and 30 and October 14 and 18 to review data on:

  • Enrollment, operating costs and facility conditions
  • Capacity of other schools to absorb students
  • Availability and continuity of special programs
  • Transportation and environmental factors (traffic, freeway access, etc.)
  • Balance of student demographics and feeder patterns
  • Aesthetics and community impact

The group may recommend boundary adjustments, consolidating under-enrolled campuses, or targeted facility investments to ensure long-term sustainability and student success. Recommendations will be presented to the Board in November, with a final decision expected in December 2025.

All meetings are livestreamed from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the LynwoodTV YouTube channel to ensure community access. Families and staff are also encouraged to submit questions or feedback on the District’s website, which will be shared with the committee to inform this important work
