Lynwood Unified Strengthens Reading and Math Support for Elementary Students

Lynwood Unified is strengthening student learning by expanding academic support where it matters most – inside the classroom – through the continued work of Academic Coaches and the introduction of Intervention Teachers at all elementary schools.

Together, these efforts help students build strong skills in reading, writing and math while ensuring they receive timely, targeted support and teachers are equipped with the guidance they need to succeed.

Now in their second year, Academic Coaches support teachers by strengthening instruction through collaborative lesson planning, sharing effective teaching strategies and reviewing student progress.

Over the past year, the District has seen academic gains among elementary students in English Language Arts and math as a result of this focused, in-class support.

New this year, Intervention Teachers are being onboarded at every elementary school to provide targeted, small-group instruction during the school day starting in mid-January. Intervention Teachers will work alongside classroom teachers to support student learning, particularly in combination-grade classrooms.

This team of educators will collaborate regularly to review student progress and adjust instruction to support student growth and achievement.

Funded through grants focused on learning recovery, this investment reflects Lynwood Unified’s commitment to high-impact instructional support, equity and helping every student thrive.
